Friday Favourites

Today we are going to introduce a mini series of blog posts called "Friday Favourites". Every Friday we will be posting something amazing...something that we believe will instantly become your new favourite too!

To start off we would like to share the amazing talent of artist Simon Beck. For most of us, we are wishing the cold snowy winter days away, but Beck makes the most out of the winter and sheds a whole new light on this season. Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, Beck spends 5-9 hour days trekking through the snow in snowshoes, creating these sensational patterns of snow art. Yes that's right, these beautiful designs are all done by foot and are typically the size of three soccer fields! Beck mostly likes producing mathematical and geometric patterns which give different effects as the day light changes and when viewed from various vantage points. Beck prefers to capture his creations in the 3D effect, so he usually tries to photograph them when the sun is at its highest point, this causes the most contrast on the designs. How long this amazing art lasts is totally dependent on mother nature. Sometimes Beck is unable to finish his work as overnight snow accumulations makes it difficult for him to continue where he left off. Although a few flurries just requires a bit of resigning on Beck's part and away he goes strategically walking about the snow. However this doesn't seem to bother Beck as his initial logic behind these magnificent art pieces was to get exercise, he said, 'The main reason for making them was because I can no longer run properly due to problems with my feet, so plodding about on level snow is the least painful way of getting exercise. Gradually, the reason has become photographing them, and I am considering buying a better camera.”

Who knew that daily exercise not only benefits your health but can also make mind boggling beautiful art. If this doesn't motivate you to go out walking today then I don't know what will!
