Friday Favourites

Landscape artist Andres Amador creates beautiful etchings by racking away the sand on beaches. This process is done during low tide, which allows him to create on a much larger scale. Amador uses only a rake, which exposes the wetter sand and causes a color difference between the raked and unraked sand, this better showcases the beautiful designs. Usually, Amadors work involves geometric and organic shapes, but sometimes he gets requests for custom pieces, such as marriage proposals or birthday greetings.  As you may have guessed creating on the beach allows for the work to only be visible for a short period of time, usually long enough to capture a few images before it is quickly washed away by the encroaching tide. This might seem devastating to some but Amador doesn't mind, he is more interested in the process rather then creating for the final product.

Andreas Amador writes in his bio
"The only constant in this existence is impermanence. In the end our lives are about the experiences we've had, not the things we have held on to. And in the face of certain erasure, in the face of our own personal, inevitable demise, the act of rallying forces on behalf of creation and beauty is a declaration of one' existences in the face of a seemingly indifferent ocean of reality. I really like that metaphor- it encourages and propels me." Andres Amador

With this hot weather we've been having it only seemed fitting to showcase art on the beach, because lets face it we'd all love to be there right now!

Have a lovely weekend.... we hope you're all staying cool!

Friday Favourites

Have you figured it out yet?? Of course you have, you're so clever, and you're right they are recycled pop bottles. Gives a whole new meaning to "pop" art doesn't it. Designer Garth Britzman of Lincoln, Nebraska created this stunning canopy by pouring small amounts of coloured liquid into empty clear plastic bottles and then strung them together, creating a perfect shaded canopy for parked cars. Although, we think this idea would be perfect to have picnics or dinner parties under or even just to lay back, relax and gaze up at the beautiful shapes and summery colours. It seems like a simple enough little project to try out on your own....hmmm I think we just found some inspiration for our next window display- let the pop drinking begin (it's ok to drink it if it's for an art project right??)

We hope you all have a lovely weekend- try not to drink too much pop---unless of course your saving the bottles!

If your in the area this weekend, make sure to check out the Fine Art and Craft Festival at the Burlington Art Centre (more info here) - and while you're out stop be the shop to see some other great fine art and handmade products!!

Friday Favourites

With today's gloomy and rainy forecast it only made sense to showcase the most recent work of photographer Gavin Hammond. Being from London England, Hammond is no stranger to damp and dreary days, but instead of hiding out indoors, Hammond finds inspiration in the city's puddles. These photographs showcase the beautiful architecture of the city as well as the everyday hustle and bustle of tourists and Londoners from the view point of a puddle. It can sometimes be hard to find inspiration and beauty on rainy days but Hammond seems to be able to capture just that in his cities dampened streets. Capturing a city in it's blurred form through the ripples of collected raindrops, creates a magical yet haunting image. However, it is a wonderful reminder that even in the gloomiest of days beauty is still around us....especially if it's mirrored back to us in a a puddle.

We hope you all take a minute today to enjoy the beauty around you and see what magical world's are hidden within a simple little puddle (and once you've captured that beautiful image let your inner child come out and make a splash!)

If your not one for puddle watching there's lots of beautiful and cheerful things to see in the shop, so grab your raincoat and come in and take a look!

Have a wonderful weekend friends and we hope to see you soon!
